The Importance of Men’s Health

Most of us associate Summer with the month of June, however, Men’s Health is also celebrated this month. Men’s Health is important because men generally have poorer health and lower utilization of health services than women. In addition, men have a lower life expectancy (Johnson et al. 2008).

The goal of Men’s Health month is to make men and their families aware of preventable health conditions and encourage regular screenings and exams. Recognizing and spreading awareness about men’s health may assist in educating men about their health concerns and encourage men to seek clinical services.

Below are some tips to prevent illness, symptoms to watch for, and common health screenings that are recommended for men.

Tips to Prevent Illness

Drink Plenty of Water
Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, and low-fat protein
-Limit alcohol consumption and sweetened beverages
Don’t smoke
-Manage your stress
Get 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 days a week
-Maintain a healthy weight
-Get regular check-ups from your physician

Symptoms to Watch For

Recurring chest pain
-Any indication of numbness in the limbs
-Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
Changing moles
-Vision problems
-A nagging cough you can’t seem to shake and/or shortness of breath
-Erectile dysfunction
Depression

Common Health Screenings

-Blood pressure
-Height, weight, BMI
-EKG
-Lipid profile
-Fasting plasma glucose
-Yearly Rectal Exam
-Skin check

There are other screenings that may be recommended depending on age, health and family histories, as well as other symptoms associated with chronic conditions that were not listed above. It is important to listen to your body and consult with your physician. Develop a relationship with your doctor just like you have with your mechanic so that when you need a “tune-up”, it will be easier for both of you. If you currently do not have a doctor, you may search for a new physician by visiting Franciscan Health’s website (www.franciscanhealth.org). We strive to be the leading wellness resource for individuals looking to live a healthy lifestyle.
